Designed shortly after World War I to replace existing light artillery pieces, the M1 75mm “pack” howitzer was a small artillery piece that could be broken down and transported by pack horses or mules. Not mass produced until the outbreak of World War II, several design improvements were added in 1940, with the new gun designated the M1A1 on M8 Carriage (replacing the original wooden-wheeled gun carriage). The lightweight field gun was mainly used to equip US Army airborne artillery battalions, but was also adopted for use by the US Marine Corps for its campaigns in the Pacific. While not as powerful as the more widely used 105mm howitzers, its small size made it more versatile and easier to transport over rough terrain.

The PaK 36 3.7cm Anti-Tank gun was the standard anti-tank weapon used by the German Army at the beginning of World War II. Its low profile and high velocity armor-piercing shell made this the ideal weapon for knocking out just about anything on the battle field at that time. Developments in Soviet armor would make this gun obsolete within the first year of the war in Russia. Read More

The LeFH 18 was the standard divisional field howitzer used by the Wehrmacht in WWII.  In 1941 the original design was fitted with a muzzle break allowing for greater range, this model was known as the leFH 18M. In March 1942 a requirement was issued for a lighter howitzer. This led to a second modification, known as the leFH 18/40. This modification consisted of mounting the barrel of an leFH 18M on the carriage for a 7.5 cm PaK 40 antitank gun.  Read More

Stage your own Operation Barbarossa, in brick-form!

This 50mm anti-tank gun was first used in the spring of 1941, and was one of the only guns capable of penetrating the heavy russian tank armor.  The Pak 38 5cm Anti-Tank Gun was developed as a response to shortcomings found in the Pak 36 3.7cm AT Gun used during the Spanish Civil War. It was put into mass production in 1939 for the Wehrmacht and proved to be one of the few anti-tank weapons capable of penetrating the armor of the T-34 tanks. While larger anti-tank guns would be introduced, the Pak 38 continued to be useful for the remainder of the war due to its small size and good ballistic performance.

The Gaz AAA

The Gaz AAA was a 6×4 Cargo truck, based on the Ford AAA model, and built in the Soviet Union in the 1930’s and 40s. During World War II it was supplied to the Soviet Army by the thousands, serving a similar role as the CCKW “Jimmy” for the American Army. Gaz trucks were a vital component to the Soviet War effort and were used in a wide ranging variety of purposes, from hauling equipment, towing artillery pieces and forming the basis for numerous specialty vehicles.

The ZiS-3 76mm Field Gun

The ZiS-3 76mm Field Gun (Officially designated M1942 Divisional Gun) was the most common medium artillery piece used by the Soviet Union during the Great Patriotic War. Due to the innovated addition of the massive muzzle brake, pre-war 76mm gun barrels could be mated to the light weight ZiS-2 anti-tank gun carriage. This created a compact, mobile, inexpensive, versatile and easy to produce artillery piece that was called, “A masterpiece of artillery systems design.” by Joseph Stalin. The ZiS-3 gun was the main armament used for the Su-76 self-propelled gun. Most ZiS-3 guns were withdrawn from the Red Army after World War II and were later supplied to satellite states. The ZiS-3 was used by communist forces in both the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Conquer any terrain with the ultra-mobile M1A1 Howitzer!

While not as powerful as the more widely used 105mm howitzers, its small size made it more versatile and easier to transport over rough terrain.

m1a1 in china 1000pxA single howitzer was airdropped in April 1945 to the 2nd SAS Regiment, a special force composed by partisans with mixed political allegiance, Russian ex-POWs, and Wehrmacht deserters, coordinated by Major Roy Farran. The gun was baptized “Molto Stanco” (“Very tired” in Italian) and used in the course of Operation Tombola to harass enemy convoys driving up and down along Route 12 between Modena and Florence. On 21 April 1945 the howitzer was towed by means of a Willys Jeep to the outskirts of Reggio Emilia, from where the Italian gunners initiated a shelling of the city that wrought panic among Axis troops. Believing that the arrival of Allied forces was imminent, the Germans and their fascist allies evacuated the city.

Following WWII The 75mm Howitzer saw continued use by the US, Britain, Japan, Turkey, Croatia, and China.  While they were used in many military exploits, as well as for ceremonial purposes,  they were also used for avalanche control at ski resorts in the Western US.
